Default Filtering in Shield: Weight-Based Protection

Description

Shield uses Trust Decisions, Risk Levels, and sending environment weights to determine where messages will be delivered.

By default, Shield users with a licensed mailbox are set at the Maximum protection level

Protection Levels

  • Maximum Protection: Everything in Balanced, plus dynamic risk elevation for the strictest filtering. This is the default protection level for all licensed users.
  • Balanced Protection: Zero-trust filtering across every threat signal
  • Minimum Protection: Only high-risk messages are filtered
  • Passthrough Mode: No filtering is performed

Messages scanned with the Maximum Protection weight-based filtering may result in an elevated risk level due to cumulative bad signals from the sender.

Balanced Protection

Shield Protection Levels.pngSome users need to receive legitimate email from senders with imperfect practices. Whether that be an older vendor system, long-standing contacts whose DMARC isn't airtight, or industry-specific tools that skip a step. To give those users a solution without dialing back protection for everyone else, a Balanced protection level is offered. It applies the same zero trust filtering as Maximum but skips dynamic elevation that can push borderline messages into junk or jail.

Shield Admins

  1. From Shield Ctrl, click on View Users to select the Shield user who needs Balanced Protection.
  2. Click on Configure Preferences.
  3. Select Balanced Protection from the Protection Levels list.

Shield Users

Only Shield Admins can make changes to Protection Levels. Shield Users must work with a Shield Admin to have their protection level changed.
