Below are its meanings, listed from most to least common. Note that the Timeline of the message, found in the message X-ray, will indicate which of these In Transit meanings apply.

If it is not in Quarantine, perform a Message Trace to locate the message. For more information about performing a message trace, please review the Microsoft documentation.

The Message Bounced

The X-ray Timeline shows that the message was bounced due to a DMARC alignment failure. Review the SPF and DKIM alignment details on the X-ray’s Details tab. If the DMARC failure involves a domain you administer, you can correct the SPF and DKIM alignment issues directly. If the failure involves an external sender, collect the relevant information and provide it to the sender or their IT staff for resolution.

If you need assistance with resolving the DMARC alignment issue, please contact Support.

The Location Did Not Update

A message that appears as In Transit in Spotlight may show in the X-ray Timeline as relayed to Microsoft, and the message will be present in the recipient’s mailbox. Although the message has successfully left Shield for final delivery, Spotlight does not update its status to reflect the new location. If you encounter this issue, please contact Support to review the root cause.

The Message is Malformed

Sometimes, messages sent by transactional or bulk messaging systems contain malformed HTML. While Shield can process most malformed messages, it cannot deliver messages that exceed 1,500 nested HTML layers. In these cases, the sender must review and correct the issue within their sending system before resending the message to the Shield user.
