Outlook Focused Inbox and Shield Trust Decisions

Description

Focused Inbox is a feature of Outlook that organizes the Inbox into two tabs: Focused and Other. Emails that matter most appear in the Focused tab, while less important messages are kept in the Other tab, which is easy to access but is out of the way. To tailor the inbox to a user's preferences, Outlook considers the emails and contacts the user engages with most while filtering out clutter like automated or bulk messages. The more the user engages with the Focused Inbox, the smarter and more personalized it becomes. More information about Focused Inbox is available from Microsoft.

Shield is designed to work with Focused Inbox, but does not interfere with user preferences for where mail is delivered.

Shield will learn and trust a New Sender if a message is moved from the Focused tab to the Other tab or from the Other tab to the Focused tab. However, Shield intentionally does not force Trusted Senders to the Focused tab so that end users can use the Focused Inbox feature however they choose. Outlook determines whether to deliver new mail from the newly trusted sender to the Focused tab or the Other tab based on where the user places the message. Shield designates the sender as trusted for delivery to the Inbox, while Outlook determines which tab—Focused or Other—the message appears in.
