Shield Activation Step 6 - Mail Exchange (MX) Record

Description

The Shield Activation process provides your MX record for your DNS host. Below are step-by-step instructions for adding the Shield MX value to your DNS host.

Applies to:

Office 365 (O365), Exchange Online, MX

Implementing MX for Shield

Once Step 5 - Sender Policy Framework (SPF) is complete it's time to begin Step 6.

NOTE: In the Shield Pre-flight Checklist article it is recommended that, at least 24 hours prior to Shield setup, the Time-to-Live (TTL) value for the MX record be set to 5 minutes. Because the activation process honors the preset TTL, setup steps for the MX record can take the full length of the TTL.

Copy your domain's Value from the Shield Activation page (Figure 1) into your existing DNS host's MX Mail Server value (Figure 2). Also, make certain that the TTL value was already set to 5 min when following the Pre-flight Checklist. If not, you will likely need to wait the entire TTL length before the MX step will be successful. Update the Priority to 10. Make sure to save your changes.
