Allow Rules & High Risk Domains

Spammers frequently use tactics such as sending from major email providers such as @hotmail.com, @yahoo.com, @gmail.com, and even your own domain in an effort to make their emails seem legitimate. If an allow rule for one of these common domains is added, any mail from that domain will pass directly to your inbox, bypassing the Mailprotector spam filter entirely.

As a general rule, instead of adding domains such as “yahoo.com” or “gmail.com” to your allow list, Mailprotector recommend adding only specific users with whom you communicate with on a regular basis. That is, add Donald@gmail.com and Arlene@gmail.com, but not just “gmail.com.”

Mailprotector also recommends not adding your own domain to your allow list. It may seem like a good idea, as it would ensure that messages from your own users are never quarantined. However, it does create a very large email security hole by allowing a great deal of messages to pass our filter, as it is a common tactic of spammers to spoof the return address on messages to that of your own domain.

In order to reduce the amount of spam that is allowed to bypass the filtering process, and as a result, better protect our users, Mailprotector has classified a number of domains as “High Risk.” These are domains commonly used by spammers for issuing unwanted or potentially dangerous mail. Adding a global allow rule for a High Risk Domain creates a very large hole in your email security, as it will allow a great deal of spam to entirely bypass our filtering mechanisms. As such, the Mailprotector dashboard will not allow you to add a global allow rule for one of these domains. You can, of course, still add specific users at these domains.
